ANDREW LILES - ''Ouarda (The Subtle Art Of
Phyllorhodomancy)' CD / DVD DualDisc (Dirter) - £16 / £17 / £18Recorded in London, Paris, and Sicily "Ouarda (The Subtle Art
Of Phyllorhodomancy)" is a travelogue that refuses to stay stuck in any
one place for any extended period. The music is as diverse as the array
of guests involved - Danielle Dax, Maja Elliott, Rose McDowall, Karl
Blake, Edward Ka-Spel and Volcano the Bear’s Daniel Padden all bestow
unique and stunning contributions. Obscure, accessible, incomprehensible
and exceptional, "Ouarda" is testament to the breathtaking production
talents of Andrew Liles, arguably the most vital and original soundsmith
of recent years. Side one of this disc is an audio CD including an
extra track and slightly remixed version of the LP. The other side of
the disc is a DVD which includes - "Ouarda (The Subtle Art of
Phyllorhodomancy)" - Colin Potter Version (A film by Michael Tang with
musical adaptations by Colin Potter), " Old Tom's Marrow" - A film by Andrew
Liles, plus truly
amazing 5.1 mixes by Freida Abtan of 3 tracks. • All Andrew Liles Titles
BLOOD AXIS - 'Born Again' CD (Storm)
- £13 / £14 / £15 Over the course of the 12 tracks which comprise their 2nd
album, "Born Again", Blood Axis explores an epic yet human universe in
which gods are summoned, kingdoms rise, riddles are unlocked, love is
lost, and worlds crumble. Whereas early Blood Axis music was marked by
keyboards and samples, Blood Axis in 2010 is stripped down to an
essential core of natural instrumentation - electric and acoustic
strings, melodeon, piano, highland bagpipes and Galician gaita, marching
percussion, the mysterious Annabel-a-tron, and Bobby BeauSoleil's
growling, prison-vintage guitar eruptions circa 1976. Underpinning the
album and propelling much of the music is the traditional Irish bodhrán,
recorded here with unprecedented power. Moynihan's ominous voice is
well matched by Annabel Lee's elfin intonations, just as her violin
finds a perfect counterpoint in Robert Ferbrache's protean guitar parts.
Shot through by myth and romance, the expressive lyrics on "Born Again"
have their roots in ancient and modern poetry, archaic invocations and
tragic laments. Both unclassifiable and unforgettable: neither folk nor
rock, traditional nor avant-garde, modern nor archaic, it is simply
Blood Axis. To everything there is season. For those who are cursed, a
time to die and to be forgotten. And for the blessed, a time to be born
again: to live on, beyond death, in the minds of men. Now is the time
for Blood Axis to be Born Again. Packaged in a beautiful gatefold outsize cover
with foilblock lettering and a 24-page booklet. • All Blood Axis Titles
ÍON - 'Immaculada' CD (Equilibrium Music)
- £11 / £12 / £13 A collection of slow motion mysterious ballads, balancing
light and shade, salvation and loss, matching Irish landscapes and
Mediterranean sunbathed seashores with its haunting Celtic vibes that
thrive and build upon tribal rhythmic patterns. Much like its 2006 predecessor "Madre,
Protégenos", the straightforward and minimalistic overall tone of the
album is misleading, as its layered complexity and resonant harmonies
reveal themselves at each listen, one mystery at a time, and one step
closer to the end of this spiritual quest. Mostly recorded in the
Portuguese countryside and in Dublin city, the intricate instrumental
backbone is mainly constructed out of traditional instruments. With the
mandolin family taking center stage, the tracks have been arranged to
incorporate ethnic instrumentation (flutes, uillean pipes) which
contrast with the sparse orchestration supplied by cello, violin,
acoustic guitars, keyboard pads and piano, supported by the earthbound
pulse of the percussion. Presented in a beautiful 6-panel digipak with
foilblock lettering.
MERZBOW - 'Another Merzbow Records' 3 x
CD Set (Dirter)
- £22 / £24 / £26 Possibly the most essential Merzbow release for many years.
This 3CD set is culled from appearances on various compilations, ranging
from the most obscure cassette releases, to long out of print gems on
labels such as Blast First and Susan Lawly. This material spans an
entire decade from 1991 to 2001 and as such, tells its own story of the
development and sonic chicanery that is the Merzbow sound during this
time. The three CDs in full colour sleeves are packed inside a beautiful
bronze printed slip case and the set is limited to 1000 copies. • All Merzbow Titles
MERZBOW - 'Ouroborus' CD (Soleilmoon)
- £14 / £15 / £16 Ouroboros is an ancient symbol dating back more than 4000
years. A snake or dragon eats its own tail, and represents eternity, or
the circularity of life. A more modern interpretation might suggest that
mankind will eventually consume itself once it finishes consuming all
the life and resources on Earth. Masami Akita, recording under the name
Merzbow is considered one of the preeminent artists in the field of
noise music. In recent years his output has centered on animal themes,
following his concern for the protection of animal rights. Albums for
chickens, whales, seals and dolphins have been released on a variety of
labels. "Ouroboros" is presented in an exquisite handmade screen-printed
eight-panel roll-folder featuring original artwork by Mr. Akita, and is
limited to 500 copies. ACT FAST! • All Merzbow Titles
RAMLEH - 'Hole In The Heart' 2 x CD (Dirter)
- £15 / £16 / £17 This material bridges the gap between the early "power
electronics" material and the later "noise rock" history of Ramleh.
Neither of these terms do justice to this pioneering group led by Gary
Mundy. Originally issued by Gary's own "Broken Flag" label in 1987 on
cassette, "Hole in the Heart" is now expanded and remastered. To quote
Anthony Di Franco: "...swirling phased feedback, fuzzed vocals and
guitars. At the same time there were melodies, words and structures in
the music, which itself consisted of very simple electronic and acoustic
elements magnified to a colossal scale..." This music has a harmonic
beauty, if you look for it, that all its imitators lack. Listen and you
will hear the genesis of what was to follow from many 90's underground
bands such as label mates and close collaborators, Skullflower. Packaged
in the classic "Broken Flag" monochrome style and encased in a double
"Super Jewel Box". • All Ramleh Titles
ROSE ROVINE E AMANTI - 'Noi Vi Odiamo'
MCD (Skuld)
- £8 / £9 / £10 RARE ROSE ROVINE E AMANTI RELEASE FROM 2004! 6 tracks of dark
Italian Neofolk from the talented Rome artist Damiano Mercuri. "Noi Vi
Odiamo" is a conceptual release about "Hate and Punishment". The
material here moves towards a more Neo-renaissance and Neoclassical
mood, but without forgetting the dark-Folk roots of the project. Ltd x
726 copies in a card sleeve with booklet. • All Rose Rovine E Amanti Titles
SKULLFLOWER - 'Vile Veil' 12" (Noiseville)
- £20 / £23 / £26 The Kings of UK guitar noise return with "Vile Veil" in their
never ending search to see just how much a guitar can be tortured.
Brilliantly debased. Reminding of "Xaman", "InfinityLand" and "Taste The
Blood Of The Deceiver", this LP goes back to the early way of playing
by Matthew Bower (Total, Ramleh, Pure) and the notion of a "rhythm"
(although very much buried under the tons of feedback) carrying the
songs. But noise it still is and so it should be. Ltd x 300 copies with
silkscreened cover. Already a rarity! VERY FEW COPIES IN STOCK - ACT

TO BLACKEN THE PAGES / KORPERSCHWACHE - 'A Way Dark' 2 x CD (Colony Records) - £13.50 / £14.50 / £15.50 "A
Way Dark" is a bold work from two of the most pioneering blackened
noise guitar musicians working today: Texas-based Korperschwache and
Dublin's To Blacken the Pages. From lighter, shoegaze inspired tracks,
to harder, more abstract compositions, and of course exploring the
juxtaposition of each artist's extreme guitar work. The album was a
chance for both musicians to challenge other – each taking turns to
suggest themes and ideas, for example each working with drum patterns
and guitar structures, RKF (Korperschwache) often providing a sonic wall
of drone while Paul McAree (To Blacken the Pages) would blaze guitar
solos over the top. Irish import.
VON THRONSTAHL / THE DAYS OF THE TRUMPET CALL - 'Pessoa /
Cioran' CD (Infinite Fog Productions) - £11 / £12 / £13 This split release is devoted the Portuguese poet Fernando
Antonio Pessoa (1888-1935) and Romanian philosopher Emil Michel Cioran
(1911-1995), with their writings used as lyrics throughout the album.
TDOTTC 4 melancholic Neoclassical tracks, with the remaining 9 tracks
from Von Thronstahl in the Neoclassical / Ambient vein with a light
Martial touch, and all with the beautiful and charismatic voice of Josef
K. Originally released in a limited edition by Terria Fria (2004), this
stunning new edition comes in a 6-panel digipak designed by Federico
Salvador ( All My Faith Lost). • All Von Thronstahl Titles • All The Days Of The Trumpet Call Titles
WICKED KING WICKER - 'Outer Bounds Of
Sound' LP (Noiseville)
- £18 / £21 / £24 For their contribution to the "Outer Bounds Of Sound" series,
the black noise doomers WKW went more for out there noise for this
album. Still dark as hell, this album sounds more like the after effect
of trying hard to be sullen in a world that is just so peachy-keen.
Brutal wall of noise doom, just in time for Armageddon! Like Blue
Sabbath Black Cheer? Old Skullflower? You'll dig WKW. 300 copies made
with a mylar silver 'WKW' on the front of the cover. "Outer Bounds Of
Sound" is an experimental LP series from Noiseville. Each release is
pressed in an edition of just 300 copies with a hand-made cover. US

WOLFMANGLER - 'They Call Us Naughty
Wolves' CD (God Is Myth)
- £10.50 / £11.50 / £12.50 D. Smolken (also of Dead Raven Choir) returns to the God is
Myth stable in the form of his slow, grim and noisy chamber doom outfit
Wolfmangler. With the spirit of past Wolfmangler releases where covers
of folk songs, classical music pieces and jazz standards are the main
lifeblood, this latest work entitled "They Call Us Naughty Wolves" is
the band's unique take on pop music from yesteryear. The results are
very much reminiscent of a blackened burlesque chamber ensemble
funnelled through a broken radio in a post-apocalyptic wasteland picking
up distorted pieces of hits from the 1930s. • All Wolfmangler Titles
YEAR OF NO LIGHT - 'Ausserwelt' 2 x LP (Music Fear Satan)
- £16 / £19 / £22 Year Of No Light have
recruited two new thirsty mercenaries to their line-up: Shiran, of
über-doom combo Monarch! and Mathieu, of deviant-electronics act
Aeroflot. Out of their cave, they crept into an old theatre to record
these 4 tracks, catching every possible vibration of the trembling frame
of this enlivened new mansion. All the energy collected there forms
"Ausserwelt”, the sophomore album of Year Of No Light. Mystical
emanations flow out of these riffs colliding into each other to an in
ear-splitting shriek. Cranked amps and molested drums hurl their
mourning chant as a choir intoning its final psalms at the dawn of the
Last Judgment. Year Of No Light follows the path opened by "Nord”
towards more sombre psychedelics, creating its own blend of black metal,
sludge, drone or any other influence marked with the seal of darkness.
An ambiguous electrical network of acting singularities, now ready to
afford the collective metaphysical crash to come. Two slabs of black
vinyl in a superb gatefold sleeve. • All Year Of No Light Titles • All LP /12" Vinyl
VARIOUS ARTISTS - 'Willows Songs' CD (Finders Keepers) - £12 / £13 / £14 It seems as though
'Willow's Song' (from "The Wicker Man" soundtrack) has made an impact on
everyone who's heard it. All these years on, it still has a sense of
the uncanny about it. The title song appears here in its original
instrumental version, as performed by the band Magnet, and the remainder
of this album is a selection of vintage recordings and traditional Folk
songs that inspired the music featured on the film's soundtrack. It's
worth remembering that while the music of "The Wicker Man" is often
credited with having heavily influenced the various psychedelic folk
revivals that have taken place since the '70s, those songs were written
by New Yorker Paul Giovanni, and are far from the authentic Pagan tracts
they've so often passed for. This Finders Keepers album goes some way
toward reconnecting the film with the traditional material that inspired
its legendary score, and includes children's rhymes like 'Baa Baa Black
Sheep' and 'Oranges and Lemons' sung with dulcimer accompaniment.
You'll also notice appearances of medieval composition 'Miri It Is' and a
1960 recording of Child Ballad 'Willy O' Winsbury', both of which were
modified and adapted for the soundtrack recordings. There's much to
recommend this compilation - not only for fans of The Wicker Man, but
anyone with an interest in archived British folk. An essential purchase!
